In a significant development, Tata Group is gearing up to establish a semiconductor processing plant in Assam, with an anticipated investment of approximately Rs. 40,000 crore, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently. The conglomerate has formally submitted an application for the electronic center at Jagiroad, and discussions with the state government have concluded favorably, prompting Tata Group to seek the final approval from the Centre
Addressing a gathering, Chief Minister Sarma expressed optimism about the potential investment, stating, "There is very good news for us. Tata Electronics Ltd has submitted an application for setting up an electronic center at Jagiroad. They have submitted a proposal to the Government of India with an outlay of about Rs. 40,000 crore." Jagiroad, located in Morigaon district, is approximately 55 km from Guwahati, the state's largest city
Sarma revealed that the Tata Group initiated preliminary discussions with the state government regarding the semiconductor assembly and packaging plant. Satisfied with the deliberations, the group has now approached the Centre for the final nod. The Chief Minister expressed optimism, saying, "If all goes well, we will see a major investment in the state which will create a positive environment for industrialization. We are in touch with the Centre and hope that the final approval will be given in a month or two
Highlighting the potential economic impact, Sarma shared that the Tata Group has also proposed training 1,000 individuals from the state for employment opportunities in the unit. This development aligns with Assam's efforts to attract investments in the electronics and IT industry
Expressing gratitude, Chief Minister Sarma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continuous guidance in transforming the state. The announcement comes in the wake of the state cabinet's approval of the Assam Semiconductor Manufacturing and Electronic Production Policy in August, further signaling the state's commitment to fostering growth in the semiconductor and electronic manufacturing sectors
